GC run on Dawn GC: LTAR, Series 19, 07/23/2026. Two vials submitted out of order - 40 before 39. These were switched to proper order on the GC rack and all vials run sequentially. In addition, there was an issue with LTAR Series 18 being stuck on "acquiring" at the very last standard in it's sequence. This caused an issue with loading the Series 19 run, until the Series 18 was aborted for the last standard, and the run cleared from the Run Queue. I think everything worked out, but there may be no data for that last standard on series 18.

LTAR Series 18, 07/20/2026 GC run. Two samples submitted out of order. All samples run sequentially. Sample vials 80 and 79 were swapped in racks submitted for analysis (i.e. vials ordered ...76, 77, 78, 80, 79, 81....).

LTAR soil sampling for July. Too dry for push corers. Used bucket augers and took one 25cm depth sample from each station. When row crop present/harvested, took one in the row, one half way between rows, and one about a quarter of the way from a row to the next. Sampled noNI microplots the same way. -

ASP6 ANPP sampling; R1-4 all stations: 0.5mS, 0.5mE of each station to the NW corner of 2 x 0.5m frame, oriented with the 0.5m ends on the east and west. Finished sampling R1-3 -

T5 understory ANPP sampling, set LFLIT traps. NS trap… 2.4mN, 1.2mW of station 5 to SE corner of trap, frame oriented with short ends on the north/south; label ex. T5R1 NS EW trap… 2.4mS, 1.2mW of station 3 to NE corner of trap, frame oriented with short ends on the east/west; label ex. T5R1 EW. Collect newly fallen poplar leaves within frame as LFLIT (if any). Clip all biomass rooted inside frame with scissors – as close to the ground as possible. Bag as LIVE to sort in the field lab later (store in black bags in fridge). Use electric trimmers to trim back plants outside the frame to keep them from falling over the frame. Leave the frame in place and lay a screen inside it. Push the screen down inside the frame so it rests on the ground. Use clips (at least 6/trap) to attach the screen to the wooden frame on all sides. - Alyssa, Jon, Emily, Sam, Bella, Glori, Jordyn, Brian

LTER soil sampling. T1-T5: with bucket auger, took one sample (to 25cm depth) from each station 1, 2, 3, 4 (skip station 5), alternating in the crop row and between T6, T7: with bucket auger, took one sample (to 25cm depth) from each station 1, 3, 4 (skip station 2 and 5). T8 and forest cored normally. Some mainsite samples were initially taken incorrectly, so had to be resampled in the afternoon and not all sampling finished today. - Bella, Emily, Glori, Jon, Jordyn, Sam

Bury T21 bags in T3, T4 stations and strips. Bury whirl-paks in their corresponding plot and station/strip. Stations: Measure or pace ~3m in a SW direction from each station flag. At that point, place a meterstick perpendicular to the tape measure at the 50cm mark on the meterstick. Bury T21 A at one end and T21 B at the opposite end. Bury both bags within a corn row as much as possible, so not disturbed during cultivation, etc. So, bags actually buried further than 1m apart. Strip: At the approximate center of the strip on the north end of the plot, measure or pace ~10m south into the strip. At that point, place a meterstick perpendicular to the tape measure at the 50cm mark on the meterstick. Bury T21 A at one end and T21 B at the opposite end. Each bag gets buried over an orange garden marker at about a 45-degree angle with the top of the bag about 1” below the surface and the marker sticking out of the ground only about 1-2”. For removal in 21 days - someone can pull up on the orange marker to easily remove the bags. For burial, use a trowel or narrow shovel to lift the soil, place the marker and bag, and then remove the trowel and press down the soil to ensure contact with the buried bag. A flag is placed at the 50cm point or midway between the buried bags, also within a corn row, to help locate them later. Flagging tape can be added in the prairie strips as well, to help with locating the bags later. - Emily, Brian, Jordyn, Sam, Glori, Jon
